I get so excited when I can combine two subjects at one time. Recently we've been studying how to properly address a letter and in history we are focusing on the middle ages. So, I combined the subjects and the kids wrote a letter to each of their friends and then we sealed it with wax as they did in the 1600s. It was great fun and although the finished project wasn't a perfect replica, I think they got the general idea.
We shaped our seals from play dough and baked until firm.
A day later we dripped wax from a Halloween candle onto the letter and let it sit for a bit. When the wax was a slightly, but not completely firm, we pressed it with our seal.
I do not know how it will survive the mail delivery, and the post office probably think we are nuts for using wax instead of a piece of tape, but we sure enjoyed the project.
What subjects have you been able to combine when teaching your children?
